As could be guessed from the number of collaborations between Lovecraft and Robert Barlow, the relationship between the two was an important one. This tale in particular is significant as it rises above the amateur level of several of their other works, and achieves the terror and beauty found ordinarily in Lovecraft's more significant tales. This may not be entirely due to Lovecraft's hand in the writing, though, for while we are sure of both parties' participation in the writing of "The Night Ocean", Robert Barlow was also beginning to show that he too could hold his own when writing weird fiction. Highly recommended.
